How we worked

The programme technical approach prioritized the following methodologies to increase family planning uptake:

Service Delivery through Public and Private Sector Models:

The programme focused on creating demand using contextualized methods and ensuring that family planning services are available and of good quality where and when needed through capacity building of healthcare workers, ensuring effective FP commodity management and security, provision of equipment; design, production and distribution of job aids and information, education and communication materials; and facilitating other required inputs among others.

Health System Strengthening:

DESIP provided technical and logistical support to the National Ministry of Health (MoH) and County Health Management Teams (CHMTs) to strengthen planning, financing, and coordination of family planning services.

Development Impact Bond:

The project piloted an innovative development impact bond (DIB) for the reduction of unintended pregnancies in adolescents through a partnership agreement between the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) and FCDO. This component began in September 2020 and ended in September 2022.

Procurement of Family Planning Commodities:

The programme procured FP commodities for the public sector through United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to fill the commodity gaps.

Monitoring, Evaluation, Research and Learning:

The programme utilized independent Third-Party Monitor (TPM) to undertake monitoring, process evaluation and learning.
